Mahmood Ahmadi-Najad, President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, said in his letter to President Bush:
"are we to understand that allowing the original inhabitants of these lands – inside and outside Palestine – whether they are Christian, Muslim or Jew, to determine their fate, runs contrary to principles of democracy, human rights and the teachings of prophets?"
He is calling for democracy for all the people living in Israel and Palestine. The media didn't report this.

The media labled this letter to Bush as crazy and distorted but a lot of the points he made were really quite profound. I didn't get a chance to finish all of it but I printed it out long ago. Thanks for reminding me, I still have a page or two left!
It seems that what the Bush administration really wants is a return to Cold War autocrats that do our bidding in that region or any region for that matter. One man/one vote democracy will only work against Bush because the people of that region have a LONG memory and realize that the birth of the Islamic Revolution was a direct result of the Shah's policies (again, our autocrat). They also remember the United States playing both sides in the Iran/Iraq war.
I can't for the life of me understand why people in this administration felt or still feel that democracy in the middle east will result in anything short of increased anti-Americanism. I know that Bush doesn't read but SOMEONE had to have known this. Why continue to fight a battle you've lost from the beginning? It's almost too surreal to get your mind around.
